This is an extensive, though not totally exhaustive, list
of the main grape varieties currently used by winemakers
in Italy. Many are native or have been resident so long
that it’s hard to tell the difference. Others are
fairly recent imports, but the wide range, available either
as single varietals – like Chardonnay or Sangiovese,
Moscato or Nebbiolo – or as varieties largely used
for blending play, plays a significant part in the breadth,
diversity and ever growing quality of Italian wine.
Some are used across the nation, while others are specific,
or auchtoctonus, to a particular region. At the same time,
greater knowledge and improved husbandry is producing better
results from many varieties, some of which had previously
been dismissed by wine connoisseurs, like the Passarena
and Pecorino grapes in Marche.
